Christians and the Sabbath

Should Christians celebrate the Sabbath?
www.all-threads.com
I can see 7 (good number) reasons why Believers should honour the Sabbath. We have to come to the point of deciding whether we believe the Bible or not. We cannot believe just chosen parts and hang on to what man tells us to believe. So either we believe manmade rules (Whether Christian manmade or Jewish manmade) or we believe the whole Bible as the truth.
Reason 1: God blessed and made the Sabbath holy. . I cannot find in Scriptures any verse saying that He blessed and made the first day of the week holy. It is written –
Genesis 2:3 God blessed the seventh day and made it holy.
Reason 2: The Lord is very, very serious about the Sabbath and repeatedly reminds us to remember and keep the Sabbath. So why ignore Him? It is written –
Exodus 20:8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exodus 31:13 Above all, you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord sanctify you. You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you.
Exodus 31:4 Therefore you are to keep my Sabbath, because it is set apart for you.
Deuteronomy 5:12 (Commandment 4) Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you.
Isaiah 56:2 Blessed is the man who does this, the man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil.
Isaiah 56: 6-7 And foreigners who bind themselves to the Lord to serve him, to love the name of the Lord, and to worship him, all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it and who hold fast to my covenant – these I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer.
Isaiah 68:13-14 If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honourable, and if you honour it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speak idle words, they you will find joy in the world.
Reason 3: Besides the Sabbath being a holy day to get together for assembly, we are to celebrate it wherever we live as one of the Lord’s appointed feasts. It is the first feast mentioned in Leviticus 23. It is written:
Leveticus 23:2 These are my appointed feasts, the appointed feasts of the Lord, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.
Leviticus 23:3 There are six days in which you may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly. The KJV adds the following to this verse: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings. The CJB translation reads: it is a Shabbat for Adonai, even in your home.
Reason 4: The Sabbath is kept by Jesus in the New Testament. He also taught in the synagogues on the Sabbath. It is written –
Mark 1:21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
Mark 6:2a When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.
Luke 4:16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom.
Luke 4:31 Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath began to teach the people.
Luke 6:6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled.
Luke 13:10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,
Reason 5: The Apostles also kept and preached on the Sabbath. They did not change to day after the Resurrection. Women were also noted to keep the Sabbath. It is written:
Luke 23:56b But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.
Acts 13:14b On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down. They were invited by the synagogue rulers to speak. If they were breaking the law, they would not have been allowed to speak.
Acts 13:16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: “Men of Israel and you Gentile who worship God, listen to me. Here he is speaking on the Sabbath the Jews and Gentiles in the same synagogue all believing in the same God and worshipping on the same Sabbath as per Scriptures and receiving the message of the Gospel.
Acts 13:42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath.
Acts 13:44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
Acts 15:21 For Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath. The implication here is that the Gentile were told the basics of what to do and what not when becoming Believers, thereafter they will learn the way of walking with God by listening to what is read and preached in the synagogues.
Acts 16:13 On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.
Acts 17:2 As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures.
Acts17:4 Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks. So it was not just Jews going to the synagogue on the Sabbath, God fearing Greeks as well.
Women were also noted to keep the Sabbath. It is written:
Luke 23:56b But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.
Acts 16:13 On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.
Reason 6: The Lord does not change. If He said He sanctified the seventh day yesterday, it will be so today and also tomorrow. It is written -
Malachi 3:6 I am the Lord, and I do not change.
Malachi 3:7 You, like your ancestors before you have turned away from my laws and have not kept them. Turn back to me, and I will turn to you.
Reason 7: There is symbolism in the Sabbath ceremony for the Jews and also for the Believers to remember and honour the Lord. It is totally lost on you if you ignore the Sabbath and the very meaningful ceremony to bring the Sabbath into your home and to have holy time with the Lord in your home or dwelling. The freedom of the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt is remembered with 2 candles – to remember and to keep the Sabbath. Wine is taken to remember the blood on the doorposts and bread is taken to remember the manna. For the Believers the ceremony takes an added meaning. The freedom of Believers out of the slavery from sin is remembered with the 2 candles – Jesus the Light of the world and we must shine our light. The wine is symbolic of the Blood and the bread of the Body. So do I really want to miss out on the richness of the Sabbath and my appointment with the Lord which He set there? Or do I want to go to church on a Sunday, the first day of the week which is a manmade day of rest? As for me, I choose the Lord’s appointed time.

Why is Sunday the day of worship for Christians?

Why is Sunday the day of worship for the Christian?
Reason 1: The first Jewish Christians and Jews were persecuted by the Romans in AD135 under Hadrian. These Romans persecuted all who studied the Torah, circumcised their sons and kept the Sabbath. The gentile Christians adjusted to these new rules and separated themselves from all Jewish identity and roots.
Reason 2: Constantine the Great (321AD) declared Sunday as the day of rest. Christians were told not to Judaize. See the exact same warning in the Joy Magazine of August 2010.
In the Augsberg Confessions of Faith, art 28 it is written: “Great they say, is the power of the Church, since it has dispersed with one of the Ten Commandments.” This was accepted by Martin Luther in 1530. (Taken from God se Feeste vir jou by Gerda Erasmus)
Albert Smith, chancellor of the Archbishop of Baltimore in 1920 wrote: “If Protestants would follow the Bible, they should worship God on the Sabbath Day. In keep the Sunday, they are following a law of the Catholic Church.” (Taken from God se Feeste vir jou by Gerda Erasmus)
Reason 3: The Resurrection Day is taken as being the 1st day of the week and sometimes called the Day of the Lord.
Reason 4: Acts 20:7 is interpreted as a Communion service on a Sunday despite differences in various interpretations.
ESV: ‘On the first day of the week, when we gathered together to break bread,’
Good News: ‘On Saturday evening we gathered together for the fellowship meal.’
NIV: ‘On the first day of the week we came together to break bread.’
New English Bible: ‘On the Saturday night, in our assembly for the breaking of bread,’
Not many Christians know that the Sabbath ends on the Saturday night with a ceremony called Havdallah, which starts at sundown on the seventh day and continues into the beginning of the 1st day of the week.
Reason 5: 1 Corinthians 16:2 ‘On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.’
According to Jewish custom no money is handled on a Sabbath, not then, not now. The first day of the week is a working day and not a day of worship, therefore money can be handled.

Christian attitudes towards Jews
www.all-threads.com
The Joy Magazine of August 2010 features an article called: Return to the Judaizers by Peter Hammond. Many issues are under attack here. Anti-Semitism is very strong in the world. I did some thinking and searching of Scriptural proof of what I believe to be right. I know Scripture is used in the article too. So I guess this is somewhat of a Sword battle – the Bride dancing with the Sword sort of thing.
I have to mention that the Jews are the Lord’s chosen people as is written:
Lev 20:24 (KJV) But I have said unto you, Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people.
Lev 20:26 (KJV) And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.
Exo 19:6 (KJV) And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
Deu 7:6 (KJV) For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
I have to mention this too – all the other nations are blessed by the Lord through the Jews as is written:
Gen 22:18 (KJV) And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
Gen 26:4 (KJV) And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
Gen 12:3 (KJV) And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
Then I have to mention that it is only by the Lord’s grace that non-Jews are allowed to become part of His (Jewish) family as is written:
Joh 4:22 (KJV) Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
Act 11:18 (KJV) When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
Act 13:47 (KJV) For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
Isa 49:6 (KJV) And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.
Rom 2:9 (KJV) Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
Rom 2:10 (KJV) But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
Rom 10:12 (KJV) For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
Rom 11:17 (KJV) And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
Rom 11:18 (KJV) Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.
Rom 11:21 (KJV) For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
Rom 11:23 (KJV) And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.
Rom 11:24 (KJV) For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
Rom 15:27 (KJV) It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.
Lastly I have to mention that the Lord warns us not to speak badly of the Jews, as is written:
Num 24:9b (KJV) Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.
Daniel’s prophecy of Weeks
by Inge on Jul.19, 2010, under Messianic, News
www.all-threads,com
I saw a dvd on Daniel’s vision of seventy sevens which I found very interesting.
Daniel 9:24 – Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophesy and to anoint the most holy.
This could be a referral to the Feast of Weeks. The Feasts of the Lord have significant meanings around the Messiah. The ‘seven’ could refer to a week consisting of 7 days. An implication here is that the weeks should be counted. The Feast of Weeks is the counting off of 7 weeks from the Day of First fruits at Passover. The Feast of Weeks is also called Shavuot (remember the Law given to Moses at Mount Sinai) or Pentecost (remember the outpouring of the Holy Spirit). The implication is that 70 Shavuots or Pentecosts must be counted. The Feast of Weeks is also regarded as the Day of Proclamation.
Daniel 9:25 – Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuilt Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens’ and sixty-two sevens. It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.
In 1947 the United Nations issued a decree and a few months later Israel became a state – this just before the Feast of Weeks. Counting from 1947 to 2010 gets us to 62 Feasts of Weeks. In this verse ‘streets’ can also be translated as ‘plaza’ and ‘trench’ as ‘moat’. In all of Jerusalem’s history there had never been a plaza or a moat. Now, in our modern day there is a area called the Plaza. There is also today a trench with excavations at the Western Wall which is called the Moat. All this have been built during ‘times of trouble’ as the state of Israel does not have peace. This part of the prophecy came true during the last 10 or so years.
If Daniel is not talking in chronological order about the events, than the seven ‘sevens’ could imply the final 7 years after the 62 Feasts of Weeks. The next verse talks abut war that will come like a flood and continue to the end. When we read what is happening in the Middle East, we know that war can easily come like a flood. There is military growth at present. America has sent some warships earlier this year. Israel is preparing for war. They will not go down without a very serious fight. I wonder how many surrounding countries know that Israel’s government does Bible study and takes the Bible seriously. Al Israeli citizens know where the bomb shelters are. They go to work and school and shops knowing exactly where the closest bomb shelters on the route are. If war breaks out, we can expect to see a very different war to any other war in the past. Nuclear missiles will be playing a huge role. Have you ever noticed how extremely tiny Israel is in the middle of all these hostile nations? So easy to wipe out, and yet impossible.
Joel3:16 – The Lord will roar from Zion and thunder from Jerusalem; the earth and the sky will tremble. But the Lord will be a refuge for his people, a stronghold for the people of Israel.
I googled a bit on plaza and moat in Jerusalem and found some links:

Blessings

As a child we sang a song at school – Count your blessings, count them one by one. We have so many blessings and often take them for granted.
There are more to blessings than just counting them. We are to give blessings to the Lord. Blessing the Lord is to give Him praise and thanks.
We often read or hear or wear a bracelet that says: Do as Jesus did or What would Jesus do? He was and is and will be coming again as a Jew. His name was and is still Yeshua, a name we can pronounce, so we do not really need to change it. Yeshua means the Lord saves. As a Jew Yeshua knew all the Jewish blessings and used them as well. Jewish blessings are Biblical, are New Testamental and are what Yeshua did. I’d like to quote from the Complete Jewish Bible: Moreover, Yeshua is still a Jew, since he is still alive; and nowhere does Scripture say or suggest that he has stopped being Jewish.
A blessing starts typically as follows: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe. In Hebrew: Baruck atah, Adonai Eluheinu, Meleck ha-olam. The Hebrew word for ‘bless’ is ‘baruck’ and the root meaning of ‘baruck’ is ‘to kneel’. In other words, we humble ourselves, thank and praise the Lord and acknowledge that He is our Lord and King of all. Such a blessing is much more than just a little thank you. So instead of just counting our blessings, we bless the Lord for everything coming our way throughout the day and every day. It actually makes a difference to how you perceive a day when you make a point of blessing the Lord for everything. In so doing we become more positive in outlook, we keep in touch with the Lord and we build a relationship with Him.
The first blessing in the Bible is possibly in Gen24:27 when Abraham’s servant met Rebecca after praying to meet the right woman for Isaac. “Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master.”
Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, also knew these blessings. In Exodus 18:10 ‘He said, “Praise be to the Lord, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharoah, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians.”’
New Testament examples:
Matthew 9:8 Yeshua healed a paralytic. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men.
Matthew 15:31 The people were amazed when they saw the dumb speaking, the cripple made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.
Every time Yeshua took bread, gave thanks and broke it, he said something similar to Blessed is he who brings forth the bread from the earth or Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who brought forth the bread from the earth.
Beyond the Gospels, Paul must have had these blessings in mind when he said we are to give thanks to God at all times for everything. See Ephesians 5:20 – always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, and also 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – give thanks in all circumstances.
Examples of blessings can be found in a very nice website: http://www.hebrew4christians.com/
Handy ones to begin with:
Over meals: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who by his word brings about all things.
When breaking bread: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth the bread from the earth.
When drinking wine or grape juice: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.
When reading the Bible: Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the universe, who gives us the Word of truth and the Good News of Salvation.
This blessing is actually much longer. In the Complete Jewish Bible you will find this blessing in the front of the Bible: Praised are you, Adonai our God, King of the universe, who gives the Torah of truth and the Good News of salvation to his people Israel and to all the peoples through his son Yeshua the Messiah, our Lord.
Torah is what the first 5 books of the Bible is called.
I notice that the words of the blessings are not always identical. The shorter version of ‘Blessed is he …’ is also used.

Rose of Sharon Anointing oil
by Inge on Jul.11, 2010, under Messianic, News
http://www.all-threads.com/
This is not the ordinary rose we know. It looks like an inferior type of rose or flower. It grows wild on the ground and between rocks in desert areas on the plains of Sharon. The Lord is the One who cares for it and waters it. It grows abundantly without human interference. The Rose of Sharon, our Bridegroom, was trampled upon and then raised up to glory.
This rose has sticky, gummy leaves which the goats love eating. When the shepherds brush them out, the fragrance is released and both the goat and the shepherd smell of the same anointing. Love and caring and beauty are implied here. The Bride and Groom spread the same fragrant anointing.
Isaiah 35 speaks of the desert blossoming and Sharon being in splendor. The rose in blossom on the plains of Sharon implies glory and splendor and joy and redemption. The Bride in full blossom with enter Zion with singing and everlasting joy.
Love Caring Beauty Abundance

Cedar anointing oil
by Inge on Jul.10, 2010, under Messianic, News
http://www.all-threads.com
These trees were planted by God. They represent strength and permanence. The cedar oil promotes clarity of mind. David and Solomon used cedar to build their houses and the temple. In Song of Songs cedar wood implies intimacy. In Ps 92:12 the cedar is related to righteousness. The horizontal beam that Jesus was hung from, could possibly have been cedar as well. Cedar oil was used to preserve bodies as well as clothes. It was also required for purification.
Ps.104:16 – The trees of the Lord are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.
Song of Songs1:17 – The beams of our house are cedars; our rafters are firs.
Ps.92:12 – The righteous will flourish like palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon
Song4:11b –The fragrance of your garments is like that of Lebanon.
The righteous are strong fragrant beams in the house of the Lord, to be continually in an intimate relationship with Him.
Strength Permanence Intimacy Purity Righteous
Hyssop anointing oil
by Inge on Jul.10, 2010, under Messianic, News
http://www.all-threads.com
In Biblical times it was used for purification and to drive evil spirits away. Psalm 51:7 – Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean. It is used to relieve anxiety, fungal infections, wound healing and as an aid in difficult breathing.
The fragrance of the hyssop mixed with the lamb’s blood when the doorposts were painted the evening before the exodus. This speaks of obedience, protection and deliverance. Jesus (lamb), while on the cross (doorpost) and bleeding, was given vinegar/sour wine (blood) on a reed of hyssop. Jesus was obedient to God and so provided protection and deliverance.
Hyssop speaks of total obedience and also sacrifice as well as purification. Numbers19:8 – The priest is to take some cedar wood, hyssop and scarlet wool and throw them onto the burning heifer.
Obedience Protection Deliverance Sacrifice
Aloes
by Inge on Jun.27, 2010, under Messianic, News
http://www.all-threads.com
The Biblical aloes is also Sandalwood. Sandalwood was possibly used for the making of musical instruments. The queen of Sheba gave Solomon sandalwood as a gift. He used this fragrant wood to make columns and musical instruments. 1 Kings 10:11,12 – Hiram’s fleet which had brought gold from Ofir now brought in from Ofir a large quantity of sandalwood and precious stones. The king used the sandalwood to make columns for the house of Adonai and for the royal palace, and also lyres and lutes for the singers. No sandalwood like it has come or been seen to this day. Worshipping, singing and dancing within the house of the Lord spread the fragrance of the Messiah.
Aloes is found in the following Scriptures, taken from Complete Jewish Bible:
Numbers 24:6b - … like succulent aloes planted by Adonai, like cedar trees next to the water.
Psalm 45:8 - Your robes are all fragrant with myrrh, aloes and cassia; from ivory palaces stringed instruments bring you joy.
Proverbs 7:17 – I’ve perfumed by bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.
Song of Solomon – 4:14 – nard, saffron and aromatic cane, cinnamon and all kinds of frankincense trees, myrrh, allows, all the best spices.
John 19:39 – Also Nakdimon , who at first had gone to see Yeshua by night, came with some seventy pounds (34kg) of spices – a mixture of myrrh and aloes.
We see in Numbers 24:6 that God Himself planted these trees – so they must be very special. In Songs the aloe is listed with the best of spices.
Oil is harvested from the tree when it is about 30 years old. The prophetic significance here is the fact that Yeshua started His ministry at the age of 30. The age of 30 is seen as maturity, which is reached by waiting, which in turn releases anointing.
The oil is harvested by means of making cuts into or wounding the tree for the oil to flow or bleed. The prophetic significance is the torture which Yeshua, our tree of life, endured, to release the anointing for us.
Aloe is one of the fragrances of the Messiah as in Psalm 45 and also in John as He was embalmed with plenty of aloe. Too much essential oil on a person is actually deadly. Yeshua was embalmed with a 100 times too much aloes and myrrh. It was done as a sign of respect. Prophetically He died twice and rose from the dead twice.
Robes, bedding and bodies were made fragrant with aloes or sandalwood as seen in Psalms, Proverbs and John. Waiting and maturity, love and intimacy is prophetically implied here.
Aloes has a meaning of a small tent. The Hebrew bride and bridegroom spent their wedding night in a little tent away from the family. The implication is intimacy between the Bride and the Bridegroom. Maturity is also implied here as the Bride must be mature before entering the tent and meeting her Bridegroom. A prayer shawl is often used as a little tent while praying. It creates a small pocket of intimacy while praying. See the reference to tents in Numbers 24:5 – “How lovely are your tents, Ya’akov; your encampments, Isra’el!” These tents mentioned here could possibly be the tallits of the Israelites which they were always weari
Practically, Sandalwood has a calming effect and hydrates the dry skin. It is also soothing on inflamed skin.
